1.1 Introduction
A flower, is the reproductive structure found in flowering plants. The biological function of a flower is to produce seeds. The process begins with pollination, followed by fertilization, leading to the formation and dispersal of the seeds.
1.2 Objectives
This module guides you to :
i) develop a conceptual clarity on different parts of a flower
ii) identify different parts of flower
iii) appreciate the strength of this learning object as a tool for training of teacher
1.3 Parts of Flower
There are different parts of a flower. We need to make our children understand different parts of a flower through interactive mode to sustain their motivationj for learning.
Let us discuss different parts
1.3.1 Flower - Male Parts
1.Stamen
This is the male part of the flower. It is made up of the filament and anther, it is the pollen producing part of the plant. The number of stamen is usually the same as the number of petals.
2. Anther
This is the part of the stamen that produces and contains pollen. It is usually on top of a long stalk that looks like a fine hair.
3. Filament
This is the fine hair-like stalk that the anther sits on top of.
1.3.2 Flower - Female Parts
1.Pistil
This is the female part of the flower. It is made up of the stigma, style, and ovary. Each pistil is constructed of one to many rolled leaf like structures.
2.Stigma
One of the female parts of the flower. It is the sticky bulb that you see in the center of the flowers, it is the part of the pistil of a flower which receives the pollen grains and on which they germinate.
3.Style
Another female part of the flower. This is the long stalk that the stigma sits on top of Ovary. The part of the plant, usually at the bottom of the flower, that has the seeds inside and turns into the fruit that we eat. The ovary contains ovules.
4.Ovule The part of the ovary that becomes the seeds.
1.3.3 Other Important Parts
1.Petal
The colorful, often bright part of the flower. They attract pollinators and are usually the reason why we buy and enjoy flowers.
2.Sepal
The parts that look like little green leaves that cover the outside of a flower bud to protect the flower before it opens.

1.5 Uses of Flower
Flowers are the best way to express your feelings. Flowers are used at different occasions.
- As a birthday present flowers are given.
- Flowers are used during wedding.
- Flowers are used as medicines.
- The nectar of flower is used by the bees
1.6 Sum Up
At the end of this module you are able to identify different parts of flower and learned its functions. To test your understanding on flowers play the above game at 3.4.
1.7 Assignments
Collect 4 to 5 flowers from your environment and disect it.
Try to find out whether the flower is heterosexual or unisexual.
Seperate all the parts of the flower and examine it carefully.
